PUT PASSWORD ON ZIP FILES IN WINDOWS 7

The compressed files are normally called ZIP files and Windows has this built-in option for creating and managing such files. In Windows XP, there was also an option of password protecting your ZIP file which is handy if the data is sensitive. As of recently, Microsoft has omitted this option in newer versions like Windows 7. In this article, I will show you how to password protect your ZIP files in Windows 7.

There is a software called WinRAR for handling compressed files. It can manage ZIP files as well as its own compression format called RAR files (with the file extension as *.rar). You will need this software. If you don't already have it, you can download it by the link given below

WinRAR x86 (32-bit) is for 32-bit Windows PCs
WinRAR x64 (64-bit) is for 64-bit Windows PCs

If you're not sure about your PC, go for the 32-bit version. Other versions like MAC, Linux etc are also available. Once you get the correct version for yourself, just follow these instructions.

PROCEDURE
  1. Install WinRAR
  2. Right-click the file/folder you want to compress
  3. Select Add to Archive
  4. In the Archiving Format, select ZIP
  5. Go to Advance Tab and click Set Password
  6. Enter password and press OK
Add to Archive

There you go. Your file is not only compressed but it is also password protected. If you are having trouble following the procedure, why don't you watch this short video that I have made?

If you are a computer nerd, you might have already done this and getting bored right now but for the rest of us... it is some useful information I guess. In either case, enjoy :)
